On Friday, June 30th, 1989, a new radio station was born at 94.5. Taking over the dial position of the syndicated heavy metal station Z-Rock, a new alternative rock station called ‘The Edge’ hit the airwaves.
Beaming out from a tower way up in Gainesville, the signal was patchy, and only a few days into broadcasting, straight-line winds ripped open the roof of the building and flooded the new studios… despite that, the Edge soldiered on, but it was a bit like living in an aquarium.
The Edge mix was a variety of styles, from the hard sounds of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, to the dance mix of New Order. There were silly bands like the B52’s, and serious bands like U2. Classic alternative tracks from the early ‘80s were given an airing as well as all of the newest sounds from bands that were, as yet, unheard elsewhere.
Beyond the music, the station was fun. It didn’t take itself seriously, the Djs were genuine fans of the music they were playing, (and quite approachable). It was like your friends with a REALLY LOUD stereo. Loads of contests and appearances around town helped make The Edge a uniquely accessible station.
94.5 was influential enough that a chain of other Edge stations sprang up across the nation. Now, 20 years after it first hit the air, the original airstaff is getting back together and you’re invited.
This time we’re not launching a station (we’re all too busy on other things), but we are launching a party. At this point it’s still being put together – so your suggestions are most welcome. As always – we are open to your requests !
Best fishes!
